The 2027 Polaris Sportsman 500 is a new value-positioned ATV in Polaris’s August 3, 2026 announcement. Its current owner’s-manual specifications identify a 499cc single-cylinder engine, separate front and rear rack limits and a 1,350 lb hitch towing rating. The included winch’s 2,500 lb figure is a different rating and must not be read as trailer capacity.

Sources: the official 2027 lineup announcement and 2027 Sportsman 500/500 EPS manual 9942518, Specifications. This guide is research-based; it does not claim a ride test or a long-term reliability record. Older ATVs named Sportsman 500 need their own documents.

The working numbers to keep separate

2027 manual field Sportsman 500 / 500 EPS
Engine displacement 499cc
Maximum weight capacity 485 lb, including operator, cargo and accessories
Front rack / storage maximum 90 lb
Rear rack maximum 180 lb
Hitch towing rating 1,350 lb
Receiver-hitch tongue capacity 135 lb; rear rack plus tongue load must not exceed 180 lb
Overall L × W × H 83 × 48 × 47 in.

Use the complete manual and actual vehicle label. These values do not permit every component maximum simultaneously, and the cargo rating is not passenger approval.

Do not combine unrelated ratings

A 270 lb combined rack figure is not 270 lb anywhere

The launch release mentions 270 lb of rack capacity. The manual explains its distribution: 90 lb at the front and 180 lb at the rear. Placing the whole combined figure on one rack would ignore that component’s limit. The receiver tongue-load condition also shares a restriction with rear-rack loading.

Example: 100 lb on the rear rack plus 100 lb of trailer tongue load totals 200 lb at that combined check, exceeding the stated 180 lb rear-rack-plus-tongue restriction. A tongue weight below its separate 135 lb maximum does not make that combination acceptable. Check total vehicle load as well.

A second illustration shows how equipment matters: a 200 lb operator plus 270 lb of properly distributed cargo totals 470 lb. Against the 485 lb total reference, only 15 lb remains before additional counted accessories or other load. This is arithmetic, not loading approval; use actual masses and all operating restrictions.

What the launch equipment means for a quote

Polaris describes a 2,500 lb winch, LED lighting and 26-inch tires on 14-inch aluminum wheels among the announced features. Verify the full model code and delivered equipment, especially when comparing a base 500 with 500 EPS or an older similarly named machine.

The winch is recovery equipment governed by its own installation and operating instructions. Its line-pull number does not raise the ATV’s towing or cargo ratings. The winch-capacity guide explains that distinction as a selection principle; use the actual ATV winch documentation for operation.

Treat the announced price as dated information

The August 3 release gives a starting U.S. MSRP of $6,999 and expected dealer shipping from September 2026. That is a launch reference, not a verified current local offer or out-the-door total. Confirm actual stock, configuration, freight, preparation, taxes and other applicable charges in a written quote.

Also request the current warranty documents and local service plan. A launch paragraph is not a substitute for the terms attached to your vehicle. We do not infer a repair-cost advantage from the value positioning or promise availability at a particular dealer.

Before choosing it for your work

  • Match the full 2027 model and EPS equipment to the quote and manual.
  • Check rider fit, controls and applicable occupant restrictions.
  • Calculate rack, tongue and total loads separately using actual equipment.
  • Verify transport fit and the actual configured mass.
  • Arrange an appropriate demonstration and obtain routine parts and service information.

If your task needs an approved passenger, begin with factory two-up verification rather than an aftermarket cargo-box seat. For a different gasoline ATV shortlist, see the exact-model Outlander and Sportsman comparison.
